2016 was indeed a great year for video games. We saw the likes of some truly awesome games that turned us into anti-social geeks for weeks on end. Be it a puzzle adventure game, survival horror, or a first-person shooting game, this legion of games made it hard to pick favorites.
Since you asked for it, we gave it to you. Here’s a countdown of the top video games that took the world by storm in 2016. Let’s check them out one by one.
First on the list is Stardew Valley. Heavily inspired by the Harvest Moon video game series, Stardew Valley is a part farming sim and part role-playing adventure. It’s an entertaining game that sees the player taking over an old dilapidated farm, tending crops and raising livestock all the while taking on quests and engaging on social activities as well as romantic relationships. It’s an open-ended game which allows you to do activities that you prefer. Sounds fun, right? Well, Stardew Valley is pretty much a laidback game, but there are many characters to meet and quests to take on, which make the game quite addicting. In the end, it turned out to be a huge indie hit, getting positive reception from critics and becoming one of the highest-selling titles on Steam in the first few months of its release.
Brought to us by Square Enix, Dragon Quest Builders is a sandbox action role-playing video game. With a healthy dose of role-playing, adventure-filled quests and interesting story, Dragon Quest Builders is very similar to Minecraft. Maybe even a better “version” of the latter. In this game, you – the player – get to play as a savior to rebuild the world of Alefgard after it was destroyed. By collecting, crafting and building, you get to put together Alefgard back to its former glory. The game managed to sell over a million copies and received favorable reviews from critics, particularly getting praised for its versatility and engrossing appeal. That, I can definitely agree with.
Who hasn’t played Pokemon Go when it came out? Pokemon Go is easily one of those games that took the world by storm upon release. Known to be highly addicting, this game uses location-based technology, prompting the player to go from one place to another to catch and train different Pokemons and engage other players in a battle. Although it became a global phenomenon and managed to sell over 650 million downloads, the game received mixed reviews, with some critics praising the concept of the game and crediting it for incorporating augmented reality technology. While it’s lauded for promoting physical activity, it was also criticized for causing accidents and public nuisance. Yikes!
Tyranny is an RPG (role-playing game) set in a world where evil has already triumphed over good. Interesting premise? You bet it is. As a player, you take on the role of a Fatebinder who’s on a mission to restore order and take the world of Terratus from the grasp of the evil overlord Kyros. It’s similar to Pillars of Eternity in a way that builds upon the engine and gameplay of the previous game – only with a more engrossing tale and compelling adventure, and perhaps some improvements. Praised for its awesome mysteries and world-building, Tyranny has no doubt captured the hearts of RPG fans.
Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter video game. Released in May 2016. This objective-based shooter game displays great design and graphics as well as shows off diverse characters with unique skills and abilities, which only contribute to its overall compelling appeal. In Overwatch, you work together with your team to secure and defend control points and engage in battle with other teams. Suffice to say, this is one of those “edge of your seat” kind of games. Not surprisingly, it got a universal acclaim upon release.
Like Overwatch, Doom is a first-person shooter video game, with the option of being a single-player or multi-player. While it’s the fourth installment of the game, it’s also considered a reboot of the series. As the main player, you get to take the role of an unnamed marine as he navigates through the Union Aerospace Corporation’s research facility on Mars and battle demonic forces from Hell. Doom is definitely a fast-paced, action-packed video game that challenges your skills to survive and defeat evil forces. The awesome Glory Kill mechanics is just one of the winning factors of Doom as it earns acclaim from fans.
If you’re a fan of the Final Fantasy franchise then you probably enjoyed this latest installment. One of our favorite games of 2016, Final Fantasy XV delivers beautiful and breathtaking gameplay set in the world of EOS, revolving around four distinct characters on a quest to retake their homeland from the empire of Niflheim. With exciting missions, combat and side quests as well as an interesting world to explore, Final Fantasy XVis definitely worth the long wait.
Do you like to play video games that keep you speechless and reeling at the end? Then you’ve probably played Inside. Inside is a puzzle-platformer adventure video game and basically a Limbo follow-up by Playdead. Set in a dark, dystopic world, Inside follows a young boy who navigates through a surreal environment, solving puzzles and overcoming obstacles as he attempts to make his way out of the miserable world. Much like its predecessor, it employs black and white tones and is mostly silent, which only add to the game’s visual and thematic appeal. A thought-provoking masterpiece, Inside garnered critical acclaim upon release. Definitely a worthy successor to Limbo.
An action-packed RPG played in the third-person perspective, Dark Souls III is a fitting conclusion to the series. It closely follows its predecessor Dark Souls II when it comes to gameplay design and features a great combat and rich development of a compelling lore, which only draw players even more into the game. Here, you embark on an exciting adventure equipped with a variety of weapons to use against different types of enemies all throughout. It’s no wonder that Dark Souls III is critically and commercially successful, becoming the fastest selling game in Bandai Namco’s history. Is it still a surprise that it nabbed the number two spot on the list?
If there’s a video game that deserves the number one spot it’s definitely Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Uncharted 4 is no doubt the “Game of 2016,” with its breathtaking graphics and thrilling gameplay. Although Uncharted 4 employs a linear action-adventure game, it doesn’t disappoint, offering more freedom to players during combat situations. A Thief’s End garnered widespread acclaim and was deemed one of the best video games of 2016, even so far as winning Game of the Year awards from plenty of gaming magazines. Moreover, it was lauded for boasting compelling narrative, visual quality and emotional depth. Truly, Uncharted 4 gave a fitting and satisfying conclusion to protagonist Nathan Drake’s story.
Our final thoughts
It’s not to say that these are the only top video games of 2016. Games like Hitman, Watch Dogs 2, Battlefield 1 and many others. Still, these are the games that made an impression for me, with Uncharted 4 as my absolute favorite, providing the best gaming experience in this list.
